Engine Overhaul...

How to find AD's that apply to your engine:

  • Go to the FAA's Regulatory and Guidance Library HERE

  • Click on Current ADs - By Make

  • Click on the "L" at the top, then find Lycoming Engines in the list and click on the link

  • Find your engine and click on the link...

I am doing an unexpected overhaul because of a couple badly pitted tappets and a badly warn cam...  During the overhaul I plan to update the engine with higher compression pistons, and an ASI performance Cam.  these modification should take my 150hp O320 to about 170hp...

Once the engine was completely disassembled I started the cleaning process...  I bought some Mar-Hyde Tal-Strip aircraft paint remover from the local Advanced Auto and started cleaning...  I just sprayed it on, waited about 15 minutes, and then washed the parts down with a pressure washer...  This stuff is great!  Not only did it get all the paint off, it also removed all the baked on oil and varnish from in side the engine...  I used this method to clean the case halves, accessory case, sump, cylinders, pushrod tubes, valve covers, etc...  Once the cleaning was done, I went to the bead blaster to prep for paint (except the cases as they were clean enough and I didn't want any blast media in there)...

I then had the cases reassembles by my A&P / IA, as he wanted to check it out...  He said it was in great shape and we could go ahead and use it without spending the $700+ to send it off to be yellow tagged...  The faces were perfect, no fretting...  The bore at the front and rear was within factory new specs, and the bore at the center was only .0002 out of factory new specs, and WELL within service limits...

The mains and rod bearings were standard size and the crank looked like new...  nonetheless, I took it down to a local machine shop that came highly recommended by two A&P / IA buddies of mine to have the crank cleaned, magnafluxed, the runout checked, the prop flange checked, and for a light polish...  I also had the rods magnafluxed and checked for straightness...  Everything checked out, and the took the stuff back to my A&P for measuring...  Should be fine though with new standard size bearings...

Here's some pix of the engine removal and disassembly...

To the right you can see the lobe on the fuel pump drive gear is bad...
In the left photo you can see the difference in the worn cam lobe compared to the others...

I always used Aeroshell 15W50 oil in this engine, and according to the logs, so did the previous owners...

Here you can see the badly pitted tappets...

Here's some pix of the cleaned pieces and the masking I did to prep for painting...

I plan on painting the cases, sump, accessory cases, and misc with "New Ford Gray" engine enamel that I got form Advanced Auto...  I will be painting the cylinder bases (steel part) black, and leaving the heads (aluminum part) natural.....and I will be powder coating the pushrod tubes, intake tunes, and valve cover black as well...
