Elevators

Started 11.22.1999 - Finished 12.3.1999

elev1.jpg (54329 bytes) Clecoing the skin to the rear spar for match drilling.  Then marked the spar location for making the stiffeners.
elev2.jpg (57654 bytes) First set of stiffeners drilled to skin.
elev3.jpg (61005 bytes) Both sets of stiffeners drilled to skin.
elev4.jpg (73518 bytes) Counter weight rib drilled.  Next step is to match drill to rear spar, install in skin, and match drill ribs, and counter weight skin.
elev5.jpg (59970 bytes) Skeleton and skin ready to be primed.
elev6.jpg (51641 bytes) I am using Sherwin Williams 988 self-etching primer.
elev7.jpg (37090 bytes) First set of stiffeners back riveted to skin along with trim stiffener plate.
elev8.jpg (57617 bytes) Both sets of stiffeners riveted along with skeleton riveted and ready to install in the jig for final assembly.
elev9.jpg (60912 bytes) Elevator in the jig, checking everything before starting final assembly.
elev10.jpg (46661 bytes) Drilled and clecoed elevator horn assemble to skin, spar, and rib.
elev11.jpg (54652 bytes) Counter weight skin and ribs match drilled to skin.
elev12.jpg (56163 bytes) Another shot of the counter weight assembly.
elev13.jpg (46378 bytes) I dimpled the nutplates and riveted them to the trim stiffener plate.
elev14.jpg (59510 bytes) Here is a view of the bends I made on the elevator.  It didn't turn out as nice as the bends on the trim tab.  I may cut them off and make a rib to put in there instead.
elev15.jpg (56370 bytes) I have a no-hole yoke for my Tatco squeezer, so getting into tight places to rivet is no problem.
elev16.jpg (59669 bytes) Here I am bending the tabs on the trim tab.
elev17.jpg (53831 bytes) The trim tab turned out very nice.  I think it was the jig.
elev18.jpg (56533 bytes) I was able to get the assembly in the jig much tighter than the elevator, so it turned out much nicer.
elev19.jpg (59354 bytes) Trim tab bent and ready for final assembly
elev20.jpg (57176 bytes) Checking the fit of the hinge.  To drill the hinge to the elevator, I inserted the hinge in between the elevator skin and spar, clamped it in place, and used the existing holes in the skin as pilot holes for drilling the hinge...
elev21.jpg (58146 bytes) Hinge riveted to the elevator.
elev22.jpg (68909 bytes) I was able to squeeze the rivets on the bottom of the trim tab.
elev23.jpg (57935 bytes) Top of completed left elevator.
elev24.jpg (56619 bytes) Bottom the the completed left elevator.
elev25.jpg (52357 bytes) Test fit of the fiberglass tip on the left elevator.  I will be tackling the fiberglass while waiting for the wing kit to arrive.  It is due the middle of January 2000...
elev26.jpg (57858 bytes) Right elevator skeleton and skin ready to rivet together.
elev27.jpg (70480 bytes) In tight places, I used the male dimple die and the hole in the squeezer yoke to dimple...  It worked great.
elev28.jpg (59586 bytes) Almost finished, just need to roll leading edge.  Next is fiberglass work while I wait for my wing kit...
